Happy National Popcorn Day!

Once again we are faced with corn.  And so soon too.  But this time it's popped!  Popcorn is just fun food - tainted though it may be nowadays.  Once again the New Orleans Food Co-Op comes to the rescue, carrying organic popping corn.  While definitely a food to have in moderation, nothing beats a little popcorn now and then - try it with a little nooch!

Happy National Croissant Day!

For far too long, vegans had to sit idly by as non-vegans enjoyed flaky, light, delicious croissants.  No longer!  Breads on Oak has busted that wide, WIDE open.  New Orleans vegans are now welcome - nay, invited - to enjoy delectable croissants about one weekend a month, even those filled with chocolate and various nut pastes.

They always have a large selection of vegan goodies, so it's never a waste of time to stop by.  So seriously, go by and ask for some vegan croissants!  You won't be sorry.

Happy National Cornchip Day!

Corn is a troubled grain.  It's monocropped, subsidized, and of course someone had the bright idea to genetically modify it.  But it seems wrong to villainize the grass.  It's not corn's fault that it has been exploited by humanity.

And, after all, there are organic, non-GMO corn chips out there.  We don't have a Trader Joe's here in Nola, but they do make their own variety of organic corn chip dipper.  And lucky for you, you can order them from Amazon!

We live in a crazy world... one that wants you to eat corn chips.

Happy National Pistachio Day!

I am a fan of the pistachio.  I have yet to find vegan pistachio ice cream, but I have faith that some day that dream will be fulfilled.  Luckily pistachios are delicious all on their own.  As well as fun to eat.

Pistachio!

Today is also National Peanut Brittle Day.  See?  I told you there were a lot of peanut days.

1.25.2013

National Irish Coffee Day!

This is a day where you really can't lose - (vegan) Irish coffee day.  Except for if you get wasted drinking coffee with whiskey and sugar in it before work, which probably wouldn't be advisable for the advancement of your career.  So maybe you should wait till Saturday.

Whatever you do, make sure to drink your (vegan) Irish coffee out of a pretty vegan mug like this one from Vegan Dish.

Happy National Peanut Butter Day!

National Peanut Butter Day will be the first of many peanut-themed days.  Apparently people really love peanuts!  Except for the people who are deathly allergic to peanuts, for whom such days are a bit of a cruel joke.  (To the peanut allergic, I will not be offended if you decide to skip these posts.)  Me, I'm OK with peanuts.  My absolute favorite presentation of peanuts is in Vietnamese-style peanut sauce - preferably on the side of a nice tofu bun or some spring rolls.

Peanut Butter is one of those things that you can't really go wrong with.  It does savory.  It does sweet.  And it even does whoopie pies (that is, voopee pies).

From Etsy's Keep Calm Shop
Enjoy your peanut butter!

Happy National Rhubarb Pie Day!

Rhubarb.  It's not a vegetable you see used very often, and particularly out of the context of pie.  And, you know, famous millionaire cats.  While it's lovely in coloration and structure, one does wonder what inspired someone to bake it into a pie.  Nevertheless, not only is rhubarb baked into pies, it's even baked into vegan pies.

Happy rhubarbing, y'all.

1.22.2013

Happy National Blondie Day!

I love me a good brownie.  Blondies have always seemed somewhat lacking to me... after all, they're lacking chocolate!  But when done properly, they are delish.  Check out this lovely recipe for vegan blondies (with chocolate chips!).  Happy baking!

1.21.2013

Happy National Granola Bar Day!

I am a fan of granola bars.  But I feel it's important to be discerning about what granola bars to buy.  Of course there is the vegan factor: most soft or "chewy" style granola bars contain milk products.  There's also the matter of knowing what companies you are really supporting when you purchase processed foods.

Of course you can bypass all of this mess and just make our own.  The Yummy Mummy provides this delsih seasonal recipe - Enjoy!

1.20.2013

Happy National Cheese Lovers' Day!

For years, vegans had to put up with poor substitutes for cheese.  But no longer!  With Follow Your Heart, Teese, and the market favorite Daiya available across the country we can have melty, salty "cheese" on pizza or anything else.  And all without the gamut of badness that comes with animal-based cheese.

Personally, I celebrated today by eating cheese and crackers - specifically, a Daiya Havarti on Whole Foods "Golden Rounds."  Not the healthiest snack, but sometimes you just have to go for what's delish!  So cheese it up, cheese lovers.

1.16.2013

Happy National Fig Newton Day!

Historically, I am not the biggest fan of fig newtons.  But I've found that I will eat a whole package of Fig Newmans in a sitting without reservation.

That is all.

1.15.2013

Happy Strawberry Ice Cream Day!

There will be many, many "ice cream days" this year, and Strawberry Ice Cream Day is one I can definitely get behind.  Here in Louisiana, we get some seriously amazing fresh strawberries in the spring.  When they come into season, we should all try this strawberry ice creme recipe!

In the winter, warm-ish though it may be, it's best to enjoy strawberries preserved somehow.  Like in delicious strawberry ice!  Or use some frozen strawberries to create strawberry ice cream in your Vitamix.

When it comes to vegan strawberry ice cream, it's hard to go wrong!

1.14.2013

Happy Hot Pastrami Sandwich Day!

Hot Pastrami Sandwich Day would seem to present a huge veganizing challenge.  But as it turns out, vegans seem rather fond of creating vegan pastrami delicacies.  There's this vegan pastrami recipe on Two Vegan Boys, the vegan Reuben from the Snarky Vegan posted during Vegan MoFo, and many more.

If you want to go a simple and easy route, pick up some peppered Tofurky "pastrami-style" slices.  Fry them up for a few minutes, maybe melt some Daiya on there, and pile it onto some high-quality rye bread for a hot pastrami treat!

1.13.2013

Happy National Peach Melba Day!

I gotta say, I've never had peach melba.  But it sounds freaking delicious.  Poached peaches with raspberry sauce over vanilla ice cream?  That is a whole bunch of mid-summer delicious YES.  Of course, it's currently... January.  Which strikes me as an odd time for ice cream confections.  I intend to look into this during the summer when peaches are at their peak.  Until then, enjoy this lovely Vegalicious recipe.

1.12.2013

Happy National Marzipan Day!

Marzipan is, hands down, one of my favorite treats.  I will eat it straight out the tube, but I do so enjoy the pretty little fruit-shaped ones that are sold, among other places, at Brocato's.

Brocato's is a place of magic, and while most of their goodies are not vegan there is plenty to satisfy, such as Roman candy, Italian ice made in-house, and the aforementioned marzipan.

Happy marzipanning!

Happy National Bittersweet Chocolate Day - and happy birthday to me!!

Hi!  It's my birthday!!  For reals.  I'm old.

It's also National Bittersweet Chocolate day - how completely fitting for the birthday of a chocolate addict like me.  Now, I am all for some delicious chocolate, but I also have a conscience, which means that these days I only buy fair trade.  (Trust me, not-fair-trade chocolate is a bad scene.)

Lucky for me, the New Orleans Food Coop carries a nice variety of fair trade and absolutely delicious chocolate for my enjoyment - and yours too, for that matter.  Hooray for coops!!

1.09.2013

Happy National Apricot Day!

Apricots are, truly, a thing of beauty.  I made it well into my twenties before tasting a real, ripe apricot - what a different experience it is from those uber-sweet dried suckers.  While dried fruit has its place, it just doesn't compare to the delicate, succulent flesh of the real thing.

Given that apricots are only really in season during a narrow window from late spring to early summer, today's celebration will have to be one of a product that uses apricots instead.  I'm fond of Whole Soy & Co.'s apricot and mango yogurt - though I do feel they could have left out the mango.  Available at your local Whole Foods, and possible Rouse's as well.  ;)

Happy National English Toffee Day!

When I saw this National Day listing, I had to ask myself: what the hell is English Toffee?  Does it differ from regular toffee in some way - some English way?  (Like, is there fish in it?)  The answer seems to be a) no, it is not particularly English, and b) it is just candy pretty much made of equal parts butter and sugar and often coated in chocolate.  YUMS.

Now, I'm a girl who does not like making candy.  Thermometer what??  Not my style.  And sadly, I've not found any vegan toffee in these parts.  Candy made predominately of butter tends to be somewhat difficult to find in vegan versions - especially when you have recipes advising *not* to sub margarine because you'll "lose essential flavor."  What the heck ever y'all.  Plants have plenty of flavor, I promise.  Lucky for us, we have... the internets!  Which quickly revealed to me this beautiful option of bulk Vegan English Toffee.  Internets FTW!

1.07.2013

Happy National Tempura Day!

Wow.  What an interesting food day to have, eh?  I am fairly fond of tempura, though in my old age I do tend to be getting more sensitive to fried foods.  Alas.  Nevertheless, every now and then I stop by Sake Cafe on Magazine Street and just can't resist.  I have been assured that there is no egg in the tempura batter here, as is sometimes the case.  So if you're in a vegetable tempura kind of mood, there you go!  Just remember to order it with ponzu sauce rather than the one it normally comes with (which has a fish base).

1.06.2013

Also, Happy King's Day!!

Yes, today is King's Day!  And in case you didn't know, that means it's the official start of the Mardi Gras season.  All across New Orleans, people are switching out Christmas trees for colorful beads and masks.

And they're enjoying King Cake!  Later I'll show you the king cakes I make at home, but for now be appeased that you can purchase vegan king cakes at Whole Foods (beginning next weekend), and at the PeaceBaker in Metairie.  If you're out toward the Bywater, the PeaceBaker's cakes are available at the New Orleans Food Co-Op, and Shake Sugaree is also making vegan king cakes.  So enjoy!

UPDATE: Breads on Oak, your fabulous source for vegan croissants and other delish vegan pastries, is also making vegan king cakes this year!!

Happy National Shortbread Day!

When I first saw this day listed, I had to ask myself: what *is* shortbread?  I mean, really, what is it?  So I asked tha internets, and they told me this:
Shortbread is a type of biscuit which is traditionally made from one part white sugar, two parts butter, and three parts flour.
Thanks Wikipedia!

My second thought was, well hell, I can do that!  There's great vegan butter out there.  And I'm sure I can.  And I'm sure you can too.

But... I haven't had a lot of time to bake this winter.  For those of us who want to experience the joys of vegan shortbread but don't have the desire to bake, Vegan Essentials offers these Boston shortbread cookies.  Happy shortbreading!!

1.05.2013

Happy National Whipped Cream Day!

When I was a kid, there was never (and I mean NEVER) whipped cream in a can or, goodness forbid, Cool Whip in our house.  When it was time for whipped cream, generally used to top mama's homemade pumpkin pie or strawberry shortcake, out came the cold bowl, the mixer, and the cold heavy cream.

Clearly that's not how I do it.

I take a bit of dirty pleasure in buying vegan whipped cream in a can.  So naughty on so many levels!  But I feel safe in stating that it brings joy to vegans the world over.

Those who are far less lazy than I am can also make some whipped coconut cream.  Yummers!

1.04.2013

Happy National Spaghetti Day!

I must say, spaghetti is one of my favorite foods.  When I was a kid I always asked for my mama's spaghetti (with meat balls, back in those days) for my birthday.

My love of spaghetti and really all things pasta has endured into adulthood, though now I'm more likely to crack open a jar of Newman's on some quinoa pasta than to slow simmer a sauce to put on a pound of white wheat.  Really though, I love all kinds of noodles.  I have frequently said that noodles are my favorite food.

But what if... what IF I made a real red sauce and put it on quinoa pasta?  Only deliciousness could ensue.  I'm sure I'll get around to it some day.

I'll also try this vegan spaghetti and meatball recipe from Whole Foods... one of these days.

How do you like your spaghetti?  Do tell!

1.03.2013

Happy National Chocolate Covered Cherry Day!

Tell me truly: who does not love this sickly-sweet confection?

Well, lots of people.  But personally I've always been a fan of sickly-sweet things so these are right up my alley.  Unfortunately they tend to be made with the absolute worst bottom-of-the-line chocolate there is.  Usually, but not always!

Check out these beauties from Rose City Chocolates.  Now that is how to do a cordial!

1.02.2013

Happy National Buffet Day!

Yes, today is National Buffet Day.  Now, traditionally buffets are long steamy pits of despair where vegans are concerned.  But behold!  Check out Pepper Tree Veggie Cuisine in Houston, Texas.  All vegan buffet all the time!  It could be enough to get me over to the big sky state.

For now though, I will be satisfied with the vegan options available at the lunch buffet served up through the week at Nirvana Indian Cuisine on Magazine Street.

New year, new project: National ??? Day!

Well, it's possible that I've lost my mind.  The main evidence?  Yes, I'm starting a new project.

You know how sometimes you'll hear an offhand comment about "National Pancake Day" or "National Bagel Day" or some other seemingly random celebration of food?  Well, those have always made me think, "I wish I woulda known!"

So, I found a list.  And then I found some more.  And this year, I will be posting pretty much every day with a "National something-or-other Day."  Just for funsies.  Because really, what is life without funsies... or without National Corn Chip Day?  It strikes me as an easy and enjoyable way to celebrate (mostly) food, and provides a framework for talking about veganizing everyday pleasures.  Because if you can be vegan and still celebrate National Mincemeat Day, anything and everything must be possible!

Below is the list I'll be working from, and a few more holidays will be added along the way.  Tomorrow I'll be back to celebrate National Buffet Day with y'all.  For now, enjoy the fact that a) it's a new year, HOORAY!; b) today is also National Bloody Mary Day, and c) January is National Hot Tea month, National Oatmeal month, National Slow Cooking month, AND National Soup month!

Until tomorrow, Happy Everything.
