Happy Mardi Gras y'all!  It's your last day to live it up before lent begins.  Which means it's your last day to eat king cake!  For a little while, at least.

There have been vegan king cakes all over the city this year - exciting! - with offerings from Breads on Oak, Shake Sugary, The Peacebaker, and of course the old Whole Foods standby.

But believe it or not, this is one thing that I really like to bake myself.  My recipe came from the peerless Kittee Berns and is not mine to divulge - but I'm sure she'll share it with you if you ask real nice.  And if you put plenty of care and love into it, it will look like this:
